Today we welcome you to the state-of-the-art new-build Eating Disorder Unit based in the UK.
Kingsway Group were proud to help the NHS Trust successfully deliver the welcoming 10-bedroom facility serving patients in the local area who, before the opening of Kimmeridge Court, had to travel a great distance to receive the correct care.
With the necessity for the Kimmeridge Court Eating Disorder Unit clearly identified, the £8 million scheme was approved and work on site began in mid-2021. A collaborative approach ensured for a successful and timely opening, with Medical Architecture, Kier Construction, Kingsway Group, and the NHS Trust working in tandem to deliver a modern and non-institutional facility for the local area. As such, the project went on to gain recognition in the form of a ‘Highly Commended’ award at Design in Mental Health 2024 in the Project of The Year category.
Developing a bespoke doorset package
Kingsway Group worked closely with the NHS Trust to achieve the project goals by first defining the specific needs of the facility and its patient groups before agreeing upon a bespoke doorset package. A range of Kingsway’s solutions were then selected to reduce risk throughout the Kimmeridge Ward.
Maximising patient safety and the ability of staff to respond promptly to ligature or barricading incidents, Kingsway’s SWING Anti-Barricade and Anti-Ligature Complete Door Systems were selected for the service user bedrooms, fitted with Door Top Monitor Alarms and Duralux Secure Vision Panels.
To further reduce ligature risk within the bedrooms, Kingsway’s SHOWER doors (our new SHOWER Door System has since been launched!) were selected for en-suite areas along with a number of anti-ligature washroom accessories.
Providing the same robustness as the SWING door system, Kingsway’s single-action SOLO Door System was specified for use in corridors and communal areas, while our unique split-leaf STABLE Door System with an integrated clinic-room hatch was selected for the dispensing of medications.
Kimmeridge Court is situated within a natural wooded glade, and as such the NHS Trust wanted to preserve as much of the natural greenery and landscape as possible to help contribute to a more welcoming, therapeutic environment. A communal atrium was designed to provide panoramic views of the woodland area while offering service users a calming space to spend time, Kingsway’s SWING Anti-Barricade Door System reducing risk within this space.
This sentiment was echoed throughout the building’s interior design with the Trust & Architect carefully considering colour schemes and imagery. Kingsway were tasked with delivering a bespoke natural finish to the door systems to match the fitted furniture, resulting in a coherent visual design throughout the bedrooms and building.
The NHS Trust also carefully considered service user interaction with the communal kitchen area, leading to the specification of Kingsway’s SWING Anti-Barricade Door System to the kitchen entrance, fitted with an Oblong Pyrolux Vision Panel and Free Swing Anti-Ligature Closer. This particular doorset specification ensures patients can use the kitchen facilities independently, that the door feels light and easy to operate, and that staff have optimal observation and the ability to quickly overcome a door barricade scenario should it occur.
As a long-established and ongoing partner in patient safety for Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust, Kingsway Group’s appointment within this project provided peace of mind to the Trust that support would extend where needed beyond the project completion.
