The SWITCH Anti-Barricade Door System is the world’s first and only hinge-side anti-barricade door, designed for fast, controlled, and safe overcoming of barricading incidents by keeping staff in the ‘Green Zone’; the point at which the opening door is at its lowest speed.
Anti-ligature by design, its unique SwitchHinge mechanism allows staff to open the door outwards in seconds with no override tool kits required – even with the door lock bolt extended or tampered with, saving critical time for staff and service users during emergency situations.

SWITCH features a solid rebated frame on the closing side that increases strength and provides a non-institutional appearance, whilst a wide range of customisable finishes and hardware combinations help contribute to the therapeutic environment and aid service user wayfinding.

Anti-Barricade Door for Mental Health
SWITCH puts staff in the safe ‘Green Zone’; the point at which the opening door is at its lowest speed. This unique feature to SWITCH allows staff to remain in control of the opening door when overcoming a barricade with the door leaf acting as an additional layer of protection between staff and patient when necessary.

Fast access
Overcome service user barricades in seconds
The heavy-duty SwitchHinge lock secures the hinge parts for single action use during normal operation and provides double-action use when unlocked to overcome barricades.
By simply unlocking the SwitchHinge with the Kingsway Staff Key and pulling the recessed handle, the hinge will retract allowing the door leaf to open outwards freely to overcome barricading incidents, even if locked from the inside by the service user. The lock indicator clearly shows the status of the SwitchHinge lock.
Ligature alarm capabilities
SWITCH is fully compatible with our SENTRY Full Door Edge Alarm System to help further reduce the risk of ligature attempts within mental health facilities. Designed through research with our mental health partners to support clinical teams in improving the safety of those in their care, SENTRY is an assistive technology that alerts staff when a ligature attempt takes place against any of the door edges.
When fitted with a ligature alarm, SWITCH is fully compatible with our KOSMOS Smart Monitoring System, allowing clinical teams to fully monitor ligature alarms and record an audit trail of patient activity and staff observations to help management teams review patient care quality and highlight key trends on wards, such as service users leaving their rooms at specific times during the night or remaining in their room more than usual.

Yes, SWITCH is anti-barricade by design meaning it can open in both directions.
The doorset is single acting during normal operation, and in the event of a barricade, staff can unlock SwitchLock to allow the door leaf to open outwards. You can watch a demonstration of SWITCH’s simple operation here:
The barricade ‘Green Zone’ is the position at which the opening door leaf moves slowest. SWITCH utilises a hinge-side anti-barricade mechanism in order to position staff in the ‘Green Zone’ when attending a barricade scenario, greatly helping to minimise the risk of staff injury. Yes, SWITCH can be fitted with a Door Top Monitor (DTM) or our SENTRY Full Door Edge Alarm System covering the door’s top, leading, and bottom edge.
