Kingsway Group are pleased to announce our handover on the new 102-bedroom Mental Health Service facility at Western Australia’s Joondalup Health Campus!

The Joondalup Health Campus is the largest health care facility in the northern suburbs of Perth with a total capacity of over 700 beds; 102 of which being specifically for mental health care services. The facility is designed with a number of dedicated wards to accommodate different user groups, including young people aged 16-24, and older adults and patients over the age of 65.

A project with co-production at its core

In order to create a welcoming facility that would best serve those within it, service users and staff were closely involved and consulted throughout the project. From the initial concept phase through to the final design, this building has been designed and built for the people who will be using it. The result is a modern, bright, and therapeutic facility that will contribute to service user recovery journeys while ensuring staff have a positive environment that allows them to provide the best care possible.

The new Mental Health Service building aims to implement a progressive model of care that lends its focus to recovery. “It’s important that people have access to psychiatry, but they also need access to occupational therapists [and] social workers,” said Amber-Jade Sanderson, Western Australia’s Minister for Health and Mental Health. With outdoor spaces, communal courtyards, an education suite, a gym, and numerous spaces for occupational therapy and recovery-focused activities, the new facility achieves exactly that.

Kingsway solutions used at Joondalup

To ensure risk is minimised throughout the facility, a number of Kingsway Group’s specialist anti-ligature and anti-barricade solutions were specified. Our SWING Anti-Barricade Door Systems were selected for the service user bedrooms with electronic access control; anti-ligature by design with anti-barricade capabilities, SWING doorsets ensure staff can swiftly gain access to a room if a vulnerable service user attempts to prevent entry by barricading their door.

Working with Joondalup to accommodate service users who require additional support, we provided our SWING doorsets in a wider bespoke specification that allows staff to walk through the doors side-by-side with a service user while supporting them. The SWING doorsets were fitted with our Duralux Secure Vision Panels for bedrooms that required a safe but high-secure observation solution, whilst our Visilux Privacy Vision Panels were selected for bedroom doors where a more homely feel would be better suited to the service user.

The Vision Panels were specified to be operable from the corridor side using the Kingsway Staff Key, ensuring only authorised persons are able to operate the vision panel from the corridor, while anti-ligature thumb turns were specified on the bedroom side of the Vision Panels, allowing service users to view into the corridor at will.

Improving patient safety

To strengthen the facility’s risk management strategy further, our Door Top Ligature Monitor (DTM) Alarms were fitted to the SWING bedroom doors. The DTM Alarms help reduce risk as they alert staff if a ligature attempt is detected against the door’s top edge, allowing for a rapid clinical response in emergency situations.

For the de-escalation rooms, our SECLUSION Complete Door Systems were selected to provide a highly secure, safe, and robust door solution for areas where service users are required to be temporarily isolated in a safe environment. These doorsets were specified with our Duralux Secure Vision Panels to allow for safe observation by staff into the de-escalation rooms.

With the project now complete, Kingsway Group is proud to see the resultant facility ready to open its doors and begin supporting Perth and surrounding regions with forward-thinking mental health care services.
