Western Australia’s new 102-bed mental health facility at the Joondalup Health Campus has been awarded International New Build Project of the Year at the 2025 Design in Mental Health Awards!
The Joondalup Health Campus is the largest health care facility in the northern suburbs of Perth, with a total capacity of over 700 beds; 102 of which being specifically for mental health care services. The facility is designed with a number of dedicated wards to accommodate different user groups, including young people aged 16-24, older adults over the age of 65, voluntary adults, and a psychiatric intensive care unit. Kingsway Group are grateful for the opportunity to have supported this exemplar project and we congratulate everyone who played a part in its delivery and resultant award!
A project with co-production at its core
In order to create a welcoming facility that would best serve those within it, service users and staff were closely involved and consulted throughout the project. From the initial concept phase through to the final design, this building has been designed and built for the people who will be using it. The result is a modern, bright, and therapeutic facility that will contribute to service user recovery journeys while ensuring staff have a positive environment that allows them to provide the best care possible.
The new facility implements a progressive model of care that lends its focus to recovery. “It’s important that people have access to psychiatry, but they also need access to occupational therapists [and] social workers,” said Amber-Jade Sanderson, Western Australia’s Minister for Health and Mental Health. With outdoor spaces, communal courtyards, an education suite, a gym, and numerous spaces for occupational therapy and recovery-focused activities, the new facility achieves exactly that.
Kingsway Group solutions used at Joondalup
To ensure risk was minimised throughout the facility, a number of Kingsway Group’s specialist anti-ligature and anti-barricade solutions were specified. Our SWING Anti-Barricade Door Systems were selected for the service user bedrooms with electronic access control; anti-ligature by design with anti-barricade capabilities, SWING doorsets ensure staff can swiftly gain access to a room in the event of a vulnerable service user attempting to prevent entry by barricading their door.
Working with Joondalup to accommodate service users who require additional support, our SWING doorsets were provided in a wider bespoke specification that allows staff to walk through the doors side-by-side with a service user while supporting them.
Improving patient safety
To strengthen the facility’s risk management strategy further, our Door Top Ligature Monitor (DTM) Alarms were fitted to the SWING bedroom doors. The DTMs help reduce risk further by alerting staff if a ligature attempt is detected at the door’s top edge, allowing for rapid clinical response in emergency situations.
For the de-escalation rooms, our SECLUSION Complete Door Systems were specified for a highly secure, safe, and robust solution for areas where service users are required to be temporarily isolated in a safe environment.
