Developed in collaboration with Experts by Experience, our award-winning KALM Co-Produced Washroom Range has been compassionately designed to improve therapeutic outcomes in behavioral healthcare environments, crucially without compromising on strength, durability, and safety.
The challenge
Risk & emotional well-being
To meet stringent safety standards, bathrooms in mental healthcare settings can often feel stark and institutional, requiring the removal, or overtly safety-focused design, of everyday fixtures. While intended to protect, these measures present distinct emotional challenges service users as they navigate vulnerable times.
Bathrooms are places of privacy where patients may be particularly sensitive to their surroundings, making it important for design to promote dignity, calmness, and a sense of personal comfort despite necessary safety constraints.

KALM: Safety without compromising on design
The KALM Co-Produced Washroom Range is developed to reduce risks for patients and caregivers by prioritizing safety at every stage. The range has undergone third-party ligature and durability testing, and the secure fixing system prevents items from being removed or misused. This intentional approach ensures a safer environment where essential washroom elements remain firmly in place and resistant to tampering and weaponization.
The range supports the creation of a calm, healing environment through its smaller profiles, sculpted forms and two‑texture finishes. These features help minimzse emotional triggers and contribute to recovery and rehabilitation. Designed to blend seamlessly with most interior styles, the products provide a non-clinical feel while still meeting the same robust standards expected of stainless steel alternatives.
Made from high‑strength, anti-microbial polycarbonate, the KALM Co-Produced Washroom Range is built for long‑term durability without the risk of denting or shattering. The surfaces are easy to clean to support infection‑control routines, while secure wall fixings and anti‑tamper plugs reduce wear and prevent damage to both the product and the surrounding environment, supporting reliable, low‑maintenance operation.

A genuine co-production
We’re grateful for the opportunity to have worked with a highly-skilled team of Experts by Experience (EbEs), whose personal experience and intuition helped shape the development of the new KALM range from start to finish.
Guided by the EbEs, three pillars were established to form the design philosophy for the range: “Generous. Appropriate. Considered.”, resulting in a compassionate suite of mental health bathroom fixtures that, as well as being safe by design, help to normalise the environment while aiding rehabilitation and recovery.

Most of the visible parts of the KALM range are made from engineering grade, anti-microbial polycarbonate, as it offers exceptional strength and impact resistance yet allows us to provide a less clinical, more therapeutic aesthetic. This means we can help to normalise the care environment through our solutions, which is known to aid recovery and rehabilitation.
There are also a couple of parts within the range that use other materials:
- The mirrored surface of the KALM Mirror is made from stainless steel (316)
- The hook part of the KALM Towel Hook is made from silicone
- The cassette inside the towel dispenser is made from stainless steel (316)
- PC-ABS (Polycarbonate/Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is used on the inner part of the KALM Soap Dispenser to offer better chemical resistance
Our KALM range uses tamper-resistant security screw fixings to provide a secure, durable fixing while minimizing any gapping around the edges of the unit to help prevent the ability of affixing a ligature.
To further reduce the risk of tampering, we’ve designed specialized flush-fitting, color-matched caps to that conceal the screws and help maintain a therapeutic appearance.
All items in the KALM range come with a 1 Year Manufacturer’s Defect Warranty, which protects against manufacturing faults (not damage).
The KALM Soap Dispenser is compatible with Gojo and Softcare soaps. If you have other requirements, please contact us to discuss in more detail.
