High risk environments
69% in custody have experienced mental illness
A report published in the National Library of Medicine (September, 2024) states that approximately 69% of incarcerated individuals in Australia and New Zealand have experienced some form of mental illness during their lifetime, with 9.1% having experienced psychosis, concluding that the “prevalence of mental illness, including severe psychotic illness, is high in Australian and New Zealand prisons.”
Figures such as these highlight the daily risks faced within custodial settings and emphasise the urgency to accommodate the mental health needs of people in custody.

Kingsway Group were approached by HMYOI Wetherby in the UK to upgrade their existing communal doors in order to minimise the risk of barricade scenarios and to improve safety for both those in custody and staff.
